Masters in Disaster Management

Introduction

Sri Lanka’s exposure to natural hazards has been tragically highlighted by major disaster events such as the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and, more recently, the impacts of Cyclone Ditwah in 2025. These events revealed significant vulnerabilities in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery, while emphasizing the growing risks posed by climate change, extreme weather, and increasing human–environment interactions. As disasters become more frequent and complex, the need for scientifically trained professionals capable of managing risk and building resilience has become critically important.

The Master of Science (M.Sc.) Programme in Disaster Management offered by the Postgraduate Institute of Science (PGIS), University of Peradeniya, is designed to meet this urgent national and regional demand. The programme provides a multidisciplinary education that integrates scientific, technological, social, and policy perspectives to equip graduates with the skills required for effective disaster risk reduction, emergency response, and sustainable recovery. At this timely juncture, the programme plays a vital role in strengthening institutional capacity and enhancing community resilience in Sri Lanka and beyond.
