Library Facilities

Postgraduate students are provided with library facilities in the Library of the Faculty of Science. The library currently holds approximately 15,200 books, and 576 journal titles. In addition this library subscribes to 58 foreign and 26 local journals annually. The library has a thesis collection of about 130. Audio visual facilities are available with 85 video cassettes and 22 audio materials.

Further arrangements can be made to use the Main Library, Medical Library, Engineering Library and Agriculture Library of the University of Peradeniya. The PGIS may also organize access to other libraries in Sri Lanka by prior arrangement through relevant institutions.

The Postgraduate Institute of Science (PGIS) is a National Institute established by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in 1996, by an ordinance made by the University Grants Commission under section 18 with section 24A of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978, for the purpose of providing, promoting and developing higher education in science.

The PGIS is attached to the University of Peradeniya and depends on the university for formulation and implementation of its academic programmes and the award of postgraduate degrees.
