POSTGRADUATE
INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE (PGIS)
UNIVERSITY OF PERADENIYA

1st Short Course on Analysis of Experimental Data:
Biological And Medical Applications
25th – 27th April, 2011
Applications are called for the above three-day Short Course organized by the Board of Study in Statistics and Computer Science of the Postgraduate Institute of Science (PGIS) to be held at the PGIS during 25 – 27 April 2011. In this Short Course, participants will be exposed to Basic Statistical Techniques needed to analyse experimental data. The approach will be lectures followed by computer practicals using real life data where participants will get some hands-on experience in statistical data analysis.
Course Overview:
Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing, analyzing, interpreting and presenting data. It is now well known that statistics can be applicable to a wide variety of academic disciplines, including natural and social sciences, government, and business. The main reason behind the poor use of statistics is a lack of understanding about how to use statistical techniques properly, and interpret the results in a meaningful manner. This course aims to provide a basic knowledge with practical applications for those who require a statistical knowledge in their research works.
Course Outline:
Day 1: 25th April 2011
1. Basic concepts in Data Analysis, Introduction to sample survey. Measures of Location and Dispersion, Representation of data, Standard probability distributions.
2. Introduction to hypothesis testing and decision making, Point estimate and interval estimates, Tests for one–sample and two sample cases
3. Introduction to statistical software, Computer applications on Descriptive statistics and Hypothesis testing using real life data.
Day 2: 26th April 2011
1. Regression and correlation. Fitting simple regression models and interpretations. Introduction to Multiple regression and Model diagnostics, Transformations and modeling non linear responses.
2. One-way and two-way ANOVA, Mean separation, Interaction and factorial experiments. ANOVA for two factor factorial, Experiments with several factors.
3. Computer Applications on Regression Analysis and ANOVA using real life data.
Day 3: 27th April, 2011
1. Non Parametric methods for comparison of two independent and paired samples, Comparison of several groups.
2. Introduction to Categorical data, testing two proportions, Log linear models and Linear logistic models, Goodness of fit of models, Interpretation of parameter estimates from log linear and linear logistic model.
3. Computer Applications on Non Parametric methods and Categorical Data
